We owe our thanks to Lord Tweedmouth who, in the 1860s developed the first Golden Retriever at his Scottish Country Estate. To begin the breed, he bred a yellow, Wavy Coated Retriever which was the only one in a litter of blacks, to a Tweed Water Spaniel (this breed no longer exists). The foundation stock from which all of today's Golden Retrievers decend came from this litter. In the late 1890s the first Goldens were brought to North America and in 1925 were registered by the AKC.
